What Clinicians Miss: Sex, Relationships, and Desire Across Autism, ADHD, and PDA

AASECT CE Pending

A client stops wanting sex after a baby. A husband can't stand the feel of his partner's body since she gained weight. A client tells you she's asexual. Each of these can look like a body-image problem, a character problem, or a trauma problem, and sometimes it is. But for a lot of neurodivergent clients there's a sensory story underneath, and most clinical training never teaches you

Portrait of Emma J. Smith, PhD, LPC-MHSP, CST, CCTP
Emma J. Smith, PhD, LPC-MHSP, CST, CCTP
Founder, SOLILOQUIE

Dr. Emma Smith is an existential psychotherapist and AASECT Certified Sex Therapist who has spent more than fifteen years teaching desire to the audiences least willing to discuss it: military commands, law enforcement agencies, boardrooms, and retail floors. She is the founder of SOLILOQUIE and the creator of The Desire Recalibration™, an eight-week program for seven-figure founders and the relationships that went unattended while they built it.

Emma teaches from one premise: desire is a meaning problem, not a technique problem. Which is why the fix is never a new position or a nicer vacation; it's releasing the brake no one taught you was there.

She hosts The Intimate Philosopher podcast and keynoted the STIMULATE Sexual Wellness Symposium. Bookers describe her as the consummate professional who talks like your closest friend: clinically rigorous, disarmingly human, and genuinely funny about it.

By the end of this session, you'll be able to

1

Distinguish sensory-based changes in sexual desire and touch tolerance from body-image, relational, and characterological explanations, including narcissistic contempt, when a neurodivergent client presents with low desire or touch aversion.

2

Identify at least 3 assessment questions that help differentiate asexual identity, sensory overwhelm, and a trauma history in neurodivergent clients, including presentations where more than one is present.

3

Apply at least 2 adaptations to couples and sex therapy that reduce harm for neurodivergent clients, such as individual sessions before conjoint disclosure, structured communication formats, and predictable, low-sensory-load connection in place of standard date-night advice.

Session agenda

4:00 PM Welcome, CE housekeeping, attendance instructions

4:02 PM Framing: why sex and relationship work needs a neurodivergent lens. Opening poll: what shows up most on your caseload?

4:10 PM What it looks like vs. what it is: sensory profile shifts (postpartum desire, touch and texture aversion) and how they get misread as body-image or relationship problems

4:25 PM Ace, overwhelmed, or carrying trauma? Differentiating asexual identity, sensory overwhelm, and trauma history, and working with overlap. Case example

4:40 PM Autistic or narcissistic? Shame vs. contempt as a clinical marker, and how misattribution happens in both directions

4:52 PM When neurotypical strategies do harm: when conjoint couples therapy is contraindicated, the case for individual sessions, and scripts for disclosing sensory needs without shaming a partner

5:07 PM Intimacy without a template: connection through shared interests, scheduled and predictable intimacy, structured dialogue formats, and building a headspace for desire

5:17 PM Live audience Q&A

5:29 PM Clinical takeaways and closing reflection
